Research: Music Magazine Front Cover Analysis

In this edition of PAPER Magazine, The actress and singer, Rita Ora is represented as a simplistic minimalist beauty. She is represented as pure, clean and quite feminine. In this front cover she is seen with a very blank expression on her face. Her red lipstick stands out on the cover contrasted with the turquoise background. Her hair looks quite messy and not as defined as the rest of her features. She wears a crown made of silver and diamonds. The jewel itself already looks expensive and portrays her as quite a high status person. Along with the necklace she wears all together she is seen as a very high status person with a lot of class and elegance. She shows class through her tone of lip colour. In a sense she can even be seen as a royal figure like a queen. The narrative of this cover is showing that she seems stunned or surprised but is still seen as very high status and a higher figure in society. The shot type is a close up. She looks straight into the camera creating a type of tension and intimidation with the audience. The target audience is probably young adults (people from ages 16-25); I say this as it is very sticking and quite trendy therefore attracting that type of crowd. People interested in the magazine may be interested as the model shown on the front is better known for her music so maybe fans of Rita Ora may be interested or maybe readers may be intrigued to why the editors have decided not to overcrowd the cover with cover lines and just have a very simple image of Rita Ora. The fact that there is no cover lines also draws a crowd as there is not much distracting from the main image. this makes the reader concentrate more on the model on the front cover and why they are there and what they are wearing more than just what’s inside. It’s kind of like ‘click bait’. Instead of having a bunch of massive cover lines covering her face and drawing the eye to the cover lines there is just her face with all this detailed jewellery and bold red lip stick. The audience may find this specific edition quite different front he rest as it is very simplistic and clean compared to their other editions.

What has this made me think of / reflection to own magazine:

I liked the portaryal of women in this magazine cover and i would probably use it in my own magazine design. i enjoy this cover because it portrays women as queens and higher beings even though this may not be attained by all women.
