Case Study: Evaluation

Evaluation: Task 3

Image
The image used on this magazine cover is of a singer named Rihanna. She is a very relevant, famous celebrity which has been getting a lot of buzz in the media recently. Rihanna is known for her bold, unique, out the box, dangerous fashion choices. She is seen as a fashion mogul for these same reasons. She has recently released a new edition of her Puma Collection that, so far has been a success.  She has also recently made public her new relationship with the singer/songwriter/ record producer and actor, better known for his stage name, Drake. This has been very controversial as the two were rumoured to be together and both their fan bases have been very excited to see them make another comeback as they seemed to have a lot of chemistry in both their Billboard 100 songs together.
I chose this image of Rihanna because it goes with the name of the magazine, ROGUE. The picture in itself is, I guess, rogue in a way. It goes against many peoples’ morals and certain beauty standards. It is a never before seen, controversial picture. It is seen as controversial because she is smoking marijuana, an illegal (in some states) drug which is mostly associated to ugly, junkies with dirty dreads. In this picture the opposite is portrayed, she is the complete opposite of the stereotype associated with a joint or marijuana.
I also chose this image because it shows Rihanna the most vulnerable. She is only wearing a white bodysuit, barely any make-up and a very simple hair style. The background is white and simple and the eye is immediately drawn to her.

Cover Lines
There are several cover lines on this magazine for different types of women. This magazine is targeted to women from the age of 16 - 25. These women will be going through a lot of self-realization.
The words that stand out the most to the reader are “RIHANNA”, “love” and “Life”. Most women around this age group are intrigued on how to improve their lives, find love and still maintain a healthy social life. I chose these cover lines because it is a part of the numerous things we see, now-a-days in the media, being talked about. They are only a fraction of the number of things people enjoy talking about and find interesting. They are never ending topics that will always be spoken about.

Main Cover Line
the main cover line on this magazine cover is the quote which is an actual quote said by Rihanna some-time in the past. I found this quote online and thought it tied in well with the overall theme. The quote is “I’d love to date somebody cool, fun, funny”. Rihanna being a very famous well known artist many people are interested in knowing about her personal life. This catches the readers eye as the artist might not have mentioned this part of her life but in this specific magazine she explains it all. Readers feel some sense of exclusivity. There is also another cover line mentioning her personal life.

Title
The title of the magazine is written in a classy black bod font. It looks similar to the title and font of the ‘VOGUE’ magazine which I used as inspiration. The word Rogue means a rogue is a vagrant person who wonders from place to place. Like a drifter, a rogue is an independent person who rejects conventional rules of society in favour of following their own personal goals and values. This word in one way or another embodies what Rihanna really is and what she stands for. She is very unconventional and… rogue. The title compliments the picture and the personality of the model, Rihanna.

Tagline
My magazine does not have a tagline. I chose not to add a tagline to my magazine cover because the magazine is supposed to be quite anonymous and out of the box. By adding a tagline it gives the magazine a constant theme or even expectation for what’s inside.

Price
There is no price on the front of the magazine. This is because the magazine is supposed to be ‘priceless’. By adding a price it makes the magazine seem of less worth. It does not have a barcode either because it also gives the magazine a material value.

Date

The date is not present on the cover of this magazine because it dates the magazine and makes it seem of less worth.
